Strategies for the development of the fishing sector in Rapa Nui - The case of the Hanga Piko caleta

Presentation:
Rapa Nui, or popularly known as Easter Island, is a singular and unique destination located in Eastern Polynesia, approximately 3,600 km off the Chilean coast. This place is recognized by the presence of important archaeological remains carved into stones, known as “moai”, which play an important role as a tourist attraction. Furthermore, the island offers a wealth of landscapes and local culture to those who visit the location.

In 2020, the island developed a sustainable development plan called "Plan de Desarrollo Sustentable de la Isla de Pascua", with the aim of assisting in the island's autonomy and sustainability process.

Despite the location's great tourist prominence, the island has some guidelines related to the development of other economic activities, mainly those related to local subsistence. This research has the central objective of promoting new strategies for obtaining food, aiming to ensure greater food security for the resident population. A prominent example is the promotion of artisanal fishing, an activity that has significant historical and cultural relevance on the island.
