Territorial Remodeling Design Strategies: The
Archipelago and the Coastal Edge of the City of Castro in Chile

Presentation:

The objective is to develop a multidisciplinary project focused on infrastructures as drivers for the recovery of sectors impacted by tourism and degradation arising from the existing capacity of the coastal edge of this territory. The extension aims to bring together researchers from partner universities who currently form an active network on the theme related to the port-city, in public management, urban improvement development and population occupation, and in addressing the relationships in the development of strategic plans, as well as private entities, their territorial organizations, operations, and impacts on the use of physical space and infrastructure demand.

The project extends along the coastal edge of the city of Castro in southern Chile, in partnership with the Castro City Hall, local stakeholders in shaping and discussing improvements in the relationship between the city and water. This collaboration fosters solutions, ranging from the development of diagnostics, addressing problems, and enhancing the quality of life of the local population, to drafting frameworks and studies on integrated regional development based on renewable local resources and sustainable practices.

In this manner, the following initial contributions can be considered for structuring the work: 1. Expansion of territorial analysis models, using the Project Strategies Method (PSM) 2 as support for the coastal edge of Castro; 2. Identification of transformation processes occurring in port zones that can direct the recovery of the territory, job creation, and new sociocultural relations; 3. Multidisciplinary exchanges among various areas of knowledge and institutions that allow for the expansion of the debate on the applicability of strategies as drivers of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), facilitating the application of strategic planning for new urbanization processes.

Regarding social impacts, it is crucial to emphasize: 1. New mechanisms for economic production and restructuring in the development of recovery plans for degraded areas; 2. Formulation of new urban development scenarios and service to local communities at risk; 3. Expansion and recommendation for the development of potential public policies for the generation and recovery of identified degraded zones such as: a. coastal innovation sectors; b. vessel docking zones; c. informal occupations; 4. Strengthening new sectors of socioeconomic production generating new geographic networks and urban development zones, as an attractive element for proper occupation between city zones and the sea.

The entities involved and their professors will collaborate in the initial project in the following manner:

1. Universidad La Gran Colombia - Bogotá, Colombia - participation of researchers, workshop events, collaboration in the "Semillero de Investigación" and webinars;

2. New York Institute of Technology - participation of researchers, workshop events, and webinars;

3. Universidade Veiga de Almeida / Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Through the Model Office (EMAU) - with the participation of local researchers and students, webinars with local agents, on-site data surveys, and dialogues with local stakeholders, assistance in organizing an International Workshop;

4. Local governance of Castro - data, mapping, and organization of an International Workshop.
